Meet our teachers and staff!


Arnie Chuah-Skwarcan, Lead ELS Teacher

Arnie Chuah-Skwarcan grew up in Malaysia and did her general studies in Singapore and Hong Kong before transferring to a university in Michigan to finish her Bachelor’s degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language with a minor in Biology (1986) and Anatomy & Physiology (1998) and graduate degrees in Rhetoric & Composition (1988) as well as Physical Therapy (2000). Arnie has taught ESL/ENL at Andrews University and The Language Company @ South Bend as well as high school English at Andrews Academy (1989-1997). Being a perpetual student of languages and the human body the rest of her life are two things that would keep her happy if she could. She reads and writes in Bahasa Malaysia and can speak Cantonese, Hokkien and some Mandarin.

 

 

Deborah Brooks, ELS Teacher

Debi Brooks received Bachelors/Masters degrees from Michigan State University and also studied Spanish language, literature and culture at the University of Valencia in Valencia, Spain. In 2010, through a graduate program at Indiana University, she received certification in Teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) and is certified in both Michigan and Indiana. She taught Spanish at the high school and college levels (including Saint Mary’s) for over thirty years and designed and led nine study tours with students to Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru and Spain. From 2009-12, she served as the K-12 ESL Coordinator for New Buffalo (Michigan) Area Schools. Studying world languages and cultures is her passion and she is very happy to be joining the staff at CWIL!

 

 

Sara Nelson, ELS Teacher

 

Sara received a bachelor's degree from Taylor University in Elementary Education with a Spanish minor. Teaching English to international students and learning about divserse cultures have been passions of Sara's for much of her life. The start of her career begain in Seoul, South Korea, where she was an English teacher to middle school students for year and a half. After returning to her hometown, South Bend, she taught English to international students at The Language Company on the campus of Indiana University South Bend for four years. She received a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults from Cambridge (CELTA) in 2011. Beyond teaching English, Sara attended a two-year ministry school at Bethel Church in Redding, California. She also received a certificate in Life Coaching in 2016 and desires to see students pursue their dreams. Sara is excited to be a part of the Saint Mary's community.
