2020 Study Abroad Contest Entry

2019 Study Abroad Photo Contest Winners:

Scenic View/Landscape Winners

1st Place:  Maggie Benjamin (Nepal, Summer 2019)

A foggy morning at Lake Fewa in Pokhara, Nepal. We took a paddle boat ride out to a Hindu temple on an island in the middle of this lake!

2nd Place:  Lucia O’Quinn (Ireland, Spring 2019)

This picture was taken on the South Campus of the National University of Ireland – Maynooth. This spot was a favorite among many students, as the trees on the path form a sort of natural tunnel, heading towards one of Ireland's many old gravesites.

3rd Place:  Karly Marth (Rome, Spring 2019)

This photo was taken from one of the bridges that crosses the Tiber River. My friends and I were on our way to class, and we noticed the way the sunset was reflecting onto the river. I loved crossing this bridge because of the view of Saint Peter’s Basilica in the background. The sunset on this particular day was an added bonus to the beauty of the view.

Portrait Winners

1st Place:  Shaylee Smith (Australia, Spring 2019)

Fellow Saint Mary’s student, Emma Wieczorek, and I had the amazing opportunity to snorkel around the beauty and sea creatures of the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns, Australia. This was the experience of a lifetime for me since I am an Environmental Biology major and the reef is natural treasure!

2nd Place:  Susana Guerrero (Seville, Spain, Spring 2019)

This picture was taken at the Feria de Abril, a week long celebration in which women wear traditional flamenco dresses and men wear their best attire. During feria people dance on the streets, ride around the Feria grounds in horse carriages, and spend all day with their family and friends. My host mom let me borrow one of her dresses and helped me get ready for this big day!

3rd Place:  Megan Coeur (South Korea, Summer 2019)

Ashley Garren and I took this photo at Gyeongbokgung palace in traditional hanbok. It was extremely hot that day, but so much fun walking around the palace in hanbok taking photos.

Immersion Winners

1st Place:  Shaylee Smith (Australia, Spring 2019)

An Aboriginal man and his wife from Poornarti Aboriginal Tours welcomed us to this sacred land through a smudging ceremony. The man played the traditional instrument for this language group, clapping sticks, while the woman sang and smudged the girls. The couple then traded jobs as the tradition is that only men may smudge men because that is “men’s business” and only women may smudge women because that is “women’s business”.

2nd Place:  Katherine Hollman (Morocco, Spring 2019)

Foreign exchange students residing at Al Akhawayn University as well as native Moroccans enjoy riding on camel back through the Sahara Desert at sunset.

3rd Place:  Megan Coeur (South Korea, Summer 2019)

It was taken at the Han River. We went out with our peach buddy group and ate dinner at the Han River. The I Seoul U sign is a tourist attraction and we had to get a picture taken with it.

Kalbarri National Park Western Australia, called Nature’s Window. Went to the park on trip to Ningaloo Reef. Called Nature’s Window because when you look out of it, you have this spectacular view.

Rome, Italy. I would walk down this beautiful alley every morning to my classes. This picture is in the small community of Trastevere just behind Piazza Tirlussa. This quickly turned into myself and Natalie Spica riding the elephant and being bathed by it instead.
