Finance and Costs

Studying abroad is comparable to Saint Mary’s home campus cost of attendance. Students pay the same tuition, room/board fees, and student fees. Saint Mary’s is committed to encouraging study-abroad programming by extending most financial aid and scholarship packages to students who select to study abroad on Saint Mary's sponsored programs. The program fees for the short-term programs (Fall/Spring Break, Summer) vary. Please visit the program webpages to find out more information.

Costs of Attendance on Saint Mary’s-Sponsored Study- Abroad Programs

  • Please note that the totals for personal expenses and transportation are estimates and intended as a guide to assist in planning. Actual costs depend heavily on your style of living and will vary with individual habits, preferences, and travel choices. These fees and estimates are revised each academic year and are subject to change.

Strategy for Financing Study Abroad

Step 1: Plan Early

Funding sources are available to qualified students pursuing study abroad; however, students need to plan early. When applying for grants and scholarship, there are often requirements such as evidence of extra curricular activities, letters of reference, and writing samples which entail additional time to complete.

Step 2: Review Financial Aid Package

For students participating in a Saint Mary's-sponsored program, (most) of your financial aid package, loans, grants and scholarships can be applied to your semester/year abroad. Check out the "Would My Financial Aid Apply for Study Abroad" document

For students participating on Non Saint Mary's Sponsored Programs, (in most cases) only your federal aid can be applied.

Other than Intercultural Learning Grants from the CWIL Office, aid from Saint Mary's College is not available for summer programs. Federal loans might be available to students who will be enrolled at least half-time in the summer. In addition, all students have the option of applying for alternative loans for summer study abroad programs.

For additional information on financial aid please contact the Office of Financial Aid.

Step 3: Apply for an Intercultural Learning Grant

  • Individual Student Intercultural Learning Grant
  • Grant for Study Abroad on Saint Mary’s Programs

Step 4: Apply for External Scholarships

  • Feel free to stop by the Global Education Office in 117 Spes Unica for additional assistance in applying these opportunities.

Step 5: Complete a Budget Worksheet

  • Study Abroad Budget Worksheet ” is a general worksheet designed for students intending to studying abroad. It helps you plan your budget and spending abroad.
