About Saint Mary's

“A pioneer in the education of women, the College is an academic community where women develop their talents
and prepare to make a difference in the world.”

Founded in 1844 by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Saint Mary's College has been teaching and living women’s leadership for over one hundred sixty-seven years. As is evident from the mission statement above, women’s leadership remains a core value that defines our very identity as a women’s college. Our commitment to developing women leaders exists in both our past and our present, including such milestones as sending nursing volunteers to Civil War battlefields, the first doctoral program in theology for women, and even a course on automobile mechanics in 1915.

As an all women’s academic institution, Saint Mary’s College is committed to the education of women and promotes a life of intellectual vigor, aesthetic appreciation, religious sensibility, and social responsibility among its students. It is located in Notre Dame, Indiana just north of South Bend and across the street from the University of Notre Dame.

The cities of South Bend and Mishawaka are located near Saint Mary’s College campus and provide a variety of shopping and culinary opportunities.
